Overview

THE GREAT EMERALD BORDERLANDS: 9-DAY ULTIMATE TREKKING ODYSSEY TO MAI CHAU & PU LUONG

Step away from the persistent buzz of the modern world and enter the ancient, mist-enshrouded highlands of Northern Vietnam. The 9-Day Hiking Tour to Mai Chau & Pu Luong is an epic, slow-travel expedition forged specifically for true adventurers, mountain lovers, and cultural explorers. This trip is not a sanitized tourist drive; it is a deep, raw, and physically rewarding pilgrimage that connects two of the country's most legendary mountain sanctuaries. Over nine spectacular days, your feet will carry you across high-altitude Hmong highland villages, down rugged jungle pathways, along the shimmering dikes of White Thai terraced valleys, and straight into the primeval, limestone-carved wilderness of the Pu Luong Nature Reserve.

Your expedition begins by trading the humid asphalt of Hanoi for the cool, whispering pine forests of the northwest. You will climb into the clouds of Hang Kia, a secluded high-altitude plateau where the Blue Hmong preserve their centuries-old indigo dyeing secrets. From here, you will hike off-the-beaten-path single-tracks down into the breathtaking Mai Chau Valley, where the traditional wooden stilt houses of the White Thai rest gracefully among emerald seas of rice. But this is only your warm-up. As you cross the mountain threshold into Pu Luong, the scenery undergoes a dramatic transformation. Towering limestone needles pierce the sky, roaring waterfalls plunge into turquoise basins, and giant bamboo water wheels clack rhythmically beside crystal-clear streams.

Each day is designed to test your body and soothe your spirit. Each night, you will find shelter in authentic, hand-built ethnic stilt houses. You will sit cross-legged around blazing open hearths, savoring the rich, smoky flavors of authentic mountain cuisine, and sharing laughter with host families over cups of sweet, home-brewed Rượu Cần (fermented rice wine). This is the definitive trekking experience of Northern Vietnam—highly authentic, deeply physical, and soul-stirringly beautiful. Read on, feel the crisp mountain breeze, and book your spot on the ultimate high-country adventure!

Itinerary

Conquer the ultimate 9-day Northern Vietnam trekking tour from Hanoi to Mai Chau and Pu Luong. Hike remote ethnic villages, stay in traditional homestays, and traverse stunning limestone peaks, terraced rice fields, and pristine bamboo jungles!

Tour Plan

Expand All
  • Route: Hanoi - Hoa Binh - Thung Khe Pass - Hang Kia Village

  • Hiking Distance: Approx. 3 to 4 km light introductory walk

  • Road Condition: High-speed, smooth expressways out of Hanoi transitioning into winding mountain passes with dramatic drops and sharp hairpin turns.

  • Elevation Gain: Plus 900 meters / Minus 100 meters

Your epic northern adventure begins at 8:00 AM as the Hiking Vietnam team greets you in the lobby of your Hanoi hotel. Leaving the city's humid concrete skyline behind, our private vehicle climbs steadily southwest toward the rugged peaks of Hoa Binh Province, the ancestral home of the Muong people.

The air begins to chill and thin as we wind up the jaw-dropping Thung Khe Pass, standing at nearly 1,000 meters above sea level. Stop at the misty summit to breathe in the sharp scent of damp pine needles and charcoal smoke rising from roadside wood fires. Watch as the vast, emerald-green Mai Chau Valley unfolds below you like an intricate patchwork quilt. Instead of descending into the valley, we branch off, climbing higher into the clouds to the highly secluded village of Hang Kia, resting on a high-altitude limestone plateau.

Step out of the vehicle and feel the instant, crisp drop in temperature. Stretch your legs with a afternoon stroll through the peach and plum orchards. The earthy, damp smell of mountain moss is thick in the air. Here, you will meet the Blue Hmong people. Observe Hmong women in their intensely colorful, hand-embroidered pleated skirts, working with natural beeswax to draw complex batik patterns on indigo-dyed hemp fabrics.

Tonight, pull a wooden stool close to the open kitchen hearth of our Hmong host family. Savor a comforting dinner of ginger-infused mountain chicken, wild mushrooms, and hot steamed rice, capped off with sweet corn tea while listening to the wind sweep across the rocky karst plateau.
