The Descent into the Emerald Valley
Your adventure begins early in the morning as our private vehicle sweeps you away from the chaotic energy of Hanoi. Watch the concrete skyline dissolve rapidly into rolling green hills. Our route climbs the winding mountain roads of Thung Khe Pass. Open your window and feel the air transform—growing crisp, cool, and thin, fragrant with the smell of mountain pine, woodsmoke, and wild herbs. At the top of the pass, we stop to look down at the spectacular valley of Mai Chau, a vibrant, emerald-green basin carpeted with rice fields and cradled by towering karst mountains.
We arrive in the valley by lunchtime, checking into your charming accommodation. In the afternoon, we lace up our shoes and head out onto the trails. Your feet will crunch softly on the dry earth as we walk through the peaceful hamlets of Lac and Pom Coong villages, home to the White Thai ethnic minority.
Feel the gentle warmth of the afternoon sun on your skin and listen to the soothing rustle of giant bamboo groves swaying in the breeze. Walk along the narrow dirt dikes of the rice paddies, taking in the magnificent, pastoral landscape. In the evening, gather under the high wooden rafters of a traditional stilt house for a home-cooked feast of grilled river fish, chicken seasoned with wild forest herbs, and sticky rice steamed in bamboo tubes. Raise a small cup of local mountain wine, watching the stars fill the dark, peaceful highland sky.
The trek was beautiful and challenging, and the guide’s knowledge of the area made it even more enriching. Golden Trekking Tours took great care of us, and I highly recommend their services for anyone looking to explore Vietnam’s natural beauty.
