Overview
MAI CHAU, PU LUONG & HALONG BAY EXPEDITION: HIGHLAND TREK TO EMERALD BAY (6 DAYS / 5 NIGHTS)
1. TOUR OVERVIEW
Are you ready to leave behind the concrete noise of daily life and step directly into the living, breathing soul of Northern Vietnam? Welcome to the Mai Chau, Pu Luong & Halong Bay Expedition (6 Days / 5 Nights)—a masterfully crafted 6-day odyssey engineered for travelers who seek both the raw, heart-pumping thrill of deep mountain trekking and the luxurious serenity of legendary seascape cruising.
This expedition bridges three iconic Northern Vietnamese ecosystems into one seamless, high-impact loop: the idyllic, green valley floor of Mai Chau, the wild, sky-scraping karst plateaus and jungle reserves of Pu Luong, and the magical emerald waters and limestone monoliths of UNESCO-listed Halong Bay.
Your adventure ignites as you ascend into the cool mountain air of Mai Chau, where endless green fields of rice stretch toward towering limestone walls. From there, you plunge deep into the pristine core of the Pu Luong Nature Reserve. Over four days of immersive mountain trekking, your feet will walk along ancient hunter tracks, single-file dirt dikes, and mossy stone steps carved by the indigenous White Thai and Muong communities. Feel the satisfying burn in your calves as you conquer technical mountain climbs, breathing in the scent of wild lemongrass, sweet cinnamon, and damp moss. Sleep under warm timber rafters in handpicked ethnic stilt homestays, where the rich aroma of charcoal-roasted hill pork, wild forest vegetables, and home-brewed corn wine fills the evening air.
Then, transition effortlessly from mountain peaks to the ocean as you travel down to the coast of Halong Bay. Step aboard a luxury boutique cruise ship and sail past thousands of emerald karst islands rising like sleeping dragons from the sea. Slide into a two-person kayak to paddle through hidden marine caves, swim in secluded turquoise lagoons, marvel at subterranean caverns adorned with ancient stalactites, and greet the morning sun with a meditative Tai Chi session on the open top deck.
This is not a passive holiday; it is an unforgettable, full-sensory expedition designed to awaken your mind, challenge your body, and ignite your passion for world exploration.

Entering the Gateway of the Highlands
Your journey ignites in the soft morning twilight of Hanoi as our private vehicle sweeps you away from the buzzing urban streets. Watch the concrete buildings fade into lush, green rolling hills as we climb the winding roads of Thung Khe Pass. Step out at the pass summit where the cool mountain air instantly fills your lungs with the scent of wild pine, damp mist, and woodfire smoke from local street vendors roasting corn. Below you lies the breathtaking panoramic vista of Mai Chau Valley, a giant green carpet framed by sheer limestone walls.
We descend into Mai Chau for a vibrant, hot lunch of bamboo-steamed rice and fragrant lemongrass chicken. After lunch, we lace up our trekking boots and take our first steps onto the trail, leaving the main roads behind as we head toward the boundary of the Pu Luong Nature Reserve.
Feel the satisfying crunch of loose earth beneath your soles as we walk along the narrow dirt dikes of Sai Village. The air is heavy with the warm, sweet perfume of young rice stalks and wet earth. Listen to the steady, rhythmic swish-swish of giant bamboo stalks bowing in the mountain breeze and the distant, melodic chime of brass buffalo bells. We navigate single-track dirt trails and cross rustic bamboo bridges spanning clear, cold mountain streams. By late afternoon, we arrive in Hang Village, an idyllic White Thai hamlet tucked under the shadow of dramatic cliffs. Check into a traditional wooden stilt homestay, wash away the day's dust under a hot shower, and sit on the open timber porch as the setting sun paints the sky in shades of gold and violet. Tonight, feast on charcoal-grilled hill pork, sautéed wild bamboo shoots, and crisp mountain greens before falling asleep to the soothing, symphonic chorus of forest cicadas.
