Overview

The Hidden Soul of Northern Shan State

Escape the crowded trails of Kalaw and Inle Lake to discover the raw, untouched beauty of Northern Shan State with our Kyaukme Trekking to Palaung Villages (2 Days). Kyaukme, once a quiet colonial hill station, serves as the ultimate gateway for travelers seeking a genuine connection with Myanmar’s ethnic diversity. Unlike more commercialized routes, trekking in Kyaukme offers a "time-travel" experience into the heart of the Palaung (Ta'ang) people’s territory.

Over the course of two days, you will traverse a vibrant landscape characterized by rolling emerald hills, ancient tea forests, and mist-covered valleys. This journey isn't just about the physical hike; it’s an immersive cultural exchange. You will walk along paths used for centuries by tea farmers, witness the traditional process of steaming and drying "pickled tea" (Lahpet), and spend a night in a traditional longhouse where the hospitality of the local people transcends language barriers.

Whether you are a seasoned hiker or a cultural enthusiast, this trek provides a perfect balance of moderate physical challenge and deep spiritual reward. From the panoramic ridges of Loi Lon to the aromatic tea gardens surrounding Kyaukme, every step reveals a story of resilience, tradition, and the breathtaking natural heritage of Myanmar.

Highlights

  • Authentic Tribal Immersion: Visit remote villages of the Silver Palaung and Golden Palaung tribes, known for their colorful traditional costumes and unique longhouses.

  • The Land of Tea: Explore the source of Myanmar’s famous tea culture. Hike through sprawling plantations and learn how the finest leaves are harvested by hand.

  • Spectacular Ridge Hiking: Experience the thrill of walking along the mountain ridges of Loi Lon, offering 360-degree views of the Shan plateau.

  • Traditional Homestay: Sleep in a local home, sharing a simple but delicious home-cooked meal over a charcoal fire—the truest way to experience Shan hospitality.

  • Off-the-Beaten-Path: Kyaukme remains one of the few places in Myanmar where you can trek for hours without seeing another tourist.

  • Expert Local Guides: Our guides are from the region, providing deep insights into local customs, history, and the various dialects spoken in the hills.
