Overview

THE UNTAMED NORTH: 6-DAY DEEP JUNGLE & TERRACE TREK TO HA GIANG & BAC HA

Step beyond the boundaries of ordinary travel and venture into Vietnam’s wild northern frontier, where the sky is pierced by towering limestone needles and valleys are sculpted into golden amphitheaters of terraced rice fields. The 6-Day Ha Giang & Hoang Su Phi Trekking Itinerary is a masterpiece of adventure, crafted for true hikers who crave physical challenge, untouched wilderness, and raw cultural connection. This expedition takes you deep into the heart of Hoang Su Phi, an eco-sanctuary legendary for some of the most dramatic, UNESCO-recognized rice terraces on Earth, and leads you through the remote mountain hamlets of the Red Dao, Tay, and Nung peoples.

Your expedition begins as you leave the humid asphalt of Hanoi behind, climbing into the misty, pine-scented highlands of Hoa Binh and Tuyen Quang before entering the gates of Ha Giang. Here, the mountains don’t just rise; they explode from the earth. You will traverse forgotten single-tracks, hike beneath the shade of thousand-year-old Shan Tuyet ancient tea trees, cross roaring mountain torrents, and breathe in the rich, earthy scent of moss-draped cloud forests. Each night, you will find shelter in authentic, wooden ethnic stilt houses, tasting the hearth-smoked flavors of mountain cuisine and sharing stories over small cups of fiery, home-brewed corn wine.

Your journey culminates with a transition from the deep wilderness of Ha Giang to the vibrant, tapestry-like hills of Bac Ha in Lao Cai province—famous for its sensory-overloading ethnic markets and flower-adorned mountain trails. This is not merely a tour; it is a life-changing, soul-stirring pilgrimage into the true, beating heart of Vietnam's high country. Read on, feel the crisp mountain air, and secure your spot on the ultimate northern trek!

Itinerary

Embark on an epic 6-day Ha Giang hiking tour through Hoang Su Phi's UNESCO terraced fields, ancient tea forests, and vibrant ethnic villages. Trek off-the-beaten-path trails, stay in local homestays, and explore Bac Ha before returning to Hanoi.

Tour Plan

Expand All
  • Route: Hanoi - Tuyen Quang Highway - Bac Quang - Thong Nguyen

  • Hiking Distance: Approx. 4 to 5 km warm-up stroll

  • Road Condition: Smooth national highways transitioning into steep, twisting mountain roads with sharp hairpin turns and dramatic drops.

  • Elevation Gain: +350 meters / -100 meters

The adventure begins in the soft, early light of Hanoi. As the Hiking Vietnam team greets you at your hotel lobby, the city's hum is quickly replaced by the smooth hum of our private vehicle sweeping southwest. Watch through the window as flat concrete horizons melt into the lush, rolling green tea plantations of Tuyen Quang Province. The air begins to change, losing its city heat and picking up the crisp, cool notes of the northern highlands.

By midday, we stop at a local restaurant to enjoy a traditional, family-style lunch featuring forest-harvested bamboo shoots, tender mountain beef, and fragrant steamed jasmine rice. Continuing north, we cross the boundary into Ha Giang. The road narrows, clinging to the contours of the mountain slopes as we climb. The majestic Lo River falls away below, replaced by deep, yawning gorges and the first glimpses of the jaw-dropping Hoang Su Phi terraced rice fields, cascading down the slopes like emerald staircases carved by giants.

Arriving in Thong Nguyen, the historic gateway of the Red Dao and Tay ethnic minorities, we check into our peaceful eco-lodge or homestay. Stretch your legs with a gentle late-afternoon warm-up hike. Walk along the dirt paths of the village, breathing in the scent of damp earth, woodsmoke, and blooming wild herbs. Watch children leading water buffaloes home as the sun dips behind the towering karst peaks, painting the sky in deep shades of violet.

Tonight, gather around a crackling wood fire for a welcoming dinner of ginger-infused mountain chicken, organic greens, and fresh stream fish, capped off with a warm cup of local tea before falling asleep to the soothing whisper of the flowing river.
